Chaos set in at Gatwick Airport in London after an emergency flight cancellation of a Boeing 777-200. The decision to ground flights was due to safety concerns, and many flights were delayed during the day. Here’s the scoop.

Even though flights were scheduled to take off, authorities decided to ground planes based on safety concerns. Passengers had to reschedule their plans and wait for the next flight if possible.
Aeroplane Issues
A BA2279 was scheduled for Vancouver, Canada. According to the New York Post, the plane experienced technical issues and heating brakes. The failed takeoff and potential fire danger were a safety hazard.
Delayed Gatwick Flights
The New York Post reported that, due to the failed flight, around 23 flights were cancelled. With some delayed for more than an hour.
Jammed Runway
Travel editor for the Independent, Simon Calder, reported that the plane was stranded in the middle of the busy runway. A flight from Dubai that was supposed to land at Gatwick had to stop in Brussels “after it had been circling near gatwick for a while.”
Flight Diversions
Calder told Sky News that there were several diverted flights and delays as no planes could land or take off while the runway was blocked.
Multiple Cancelations
As a result of the delayed flight and closed-off runway, Calder said there were also “cancelations on top of cancelations” from various flights, including EasyJet and Wizz Air.

Calder also reported that there would definitely be heavy delays due to various flights being unable to meet their ETA at scheduled destinations.
Large Boeing 777-200
The Boeing 777-200 is one of the largest passenger jets, and this particular one stopped in the middle of the runway, causing massive congestion.
The Pilot’s Call
A spokesperson for British Airways said that the pilots took the decision to cancel the flight after the aeroplane showed technical difficulties.

“Safety is always our top priority… we apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused,” the spokesperson said in a statement. The decision not to take off was a matter of safety and necessity.

In an interview with BBC, one of the passengers said that he and his family had missed their scheduled event that evening. He also said that he missed the taxi.
