The YouGov survey revealed that just 37% of voters believe that the police are doing a good job, with many suggesting they haven’t improved in the last 30 years.
Police Under Fire
Recently, the Metropolitan Police has faced issues such as the Sarah Everard murder committed by former officer Wayne Couzens.
Reaction to Sarah Everard Vigil
A peaceful vigil was held by women in the city after the murder, although the police used force to remove and arrest the women from the streets, causing even more unrest.

The poll showed a concerning lack of confidence in the police if an individual were to report someone for sexual assault, meaning that some may not report it due to the lack of trust.
Meeting with the Chief
Sir Mark Rowley, Chief of the Metropolitan Police, will be meeting with London Mayor Sadiq Khan in an attempt to discuss the force’s reaction to pro-Palestinian protests.

According to reports, the Chief of Police will meet with Khan to discuss “community relations” after the backlash.

Many politicians are not happy with the way that the police handled the pro-Palestine protests arguing that the police were not doing enough to prevent attacks on Jewish people.

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who was removed from her position after calling the pro-Palestine protests “Hate” marches, lashed out at the police.
Braverman’s Backlash
Braverman insisted “thugs are free to intimidate and harass while the rest of us have to keep our mouths shut and stay out of the way.”
Accusations of Anti-Semitism
Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden insisted that there was “institutional anti-semitism” throughout the Metropolitan Police, causing the force to issue an apology.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement, “We know recent events and some of our recent actions have contributed to concerns felt by many.”

The police said they are “doing everything possible to ensure Jewish Londoners feel safe in this city”.
Listening to the Public
“It’s crucial we listen to those feeling unsafe to go about their daily lives and take immediate action to address their concerns,” the statement continued.
Meeting with Jewish Community Trust
Sir Mark Rowley is also meeting with members of the London Jewish Forum and Community Security Trust to discuss how they build rebuild relations.

Sadiq Khan’s spokesperson released a statement that said, “Everybody must feel safe going about in London wherever they please.”
A Step in the Right Direction
Concerns about the public’s view of the police are nothing new, but now that they are springing into action to address the concerns, it’s surely a step in the right direction.
