The Health Secretary has accused the Labour Party of trying to “shut women up” after years of support for the trans community.
Cabinet Minister’s Remarks
Victoria Atkins, the health secretary, levelled accusations against Labour, asserting that the party had attempted to stifle discussions on gender issues over the past decade.
Comments on Transgender Debates
Atkins’ remarks followed statements from shadow health secretary Wes Streeting, who has u-turned on his support for the trans community.
“Trans Women Are Women, Get Over It”
Streeting contended his own assertion that “trans women are women, get over it,” arguing he was wrong to use that phrase and highlighted the complexity of the issue.
Health Secretary’s Controversial Take
Atkins asserted that the Labour Party had created unnecessary intimidation on the subject and had spent years attempting to “shut women up.”
This comes during the week where Angela Rayner has stood by her comments on trans right support.
Health Secretary’s Accusations to Labour
According to Atkins, the Labour Party has created an “atmosphere of intimidation” despite Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recently making jokes about the trans community in the presence of Brianna Ghey’s mother.
Sunak’s Refusal to Apologize
The mother of Brianna Ghey, a trans teen who was tragically murdered in a suspected hate crime, was present in the room when Sunak made the joke that he now refuses to apologize for.
Sunak’s “Shame”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer quickly pointed out Brianna’s mother’s presence, pointing his finger at Sunak while uttering the word “Shame.”
Tory Donor’s Sexist Comments
Atkins’ comments come after a Tory donor, Frank Hester, came under fire for his sexist and racist remarks about Labour’s Dianne Abbott.
Hester’s Comments Ignite Tory Scandal
After it was revealed that Hester had argued in a meeting that Diane Abbott made him “want to hate all black women,” the Tories were left to deal with yet another scandal.
Sunak Accepts Apology and Money
Sunak was quick to brush the comments under the rug, accepting Hester’s alleged apology and refusing to return the £10 million donation that the Party received.
Sunak’s Idea of Common Sense
Sunak is known to have a firm stance against the trans community, arguing that men are men and women are women, “That’s just common sense.”
Streeting’s Stance on Trans Community
Labour’s Wes Streeting recently said “if you’d asked me a few years ago, on this topic, I would have said trans men are men, trans women are women.”
Streeting Claims Argument Blown Out of Proportion
Streeting argued that the whole debate had been “blown out of proportion” and that “Some people are trans, get over it. Let’s move on.”
Streeting’s U-Turn
Streeting suggested that he would not support his previous comments, arguing, “And now I sort of sit and reflect and think actually, there are lots of complexities.”
Streeting Willing to Face Critics
Streeting admitted that he was willing to face up to the criticism after withdrawing his wholehearted support for trans people.
Condemning Anti-Trans Rhetoric
Streeting said that he was willing to “take the criticism on the chin” but insisted his condemnation for what he called “ugly” rhetoric towards trans people.
Struggles Faced by Trans Community
Streeting acknowledged that the trans community are “on the wrong end” of the UK’s suicide and mental health statistics.
Streeting Slams “Scandalous” NHS
According to a recent report, the NHS has let down trans kids in its treatment of them as patients over the years, with Streeting calling the report “Scandalous.”
Vulnerable Community Marginalized
Streeting went on to ask the question, “Why is it that a group of young people who are extremely vulnerable are waiting years to access treatment?”
Tory Criticism Ahead of Election
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins’ comments about the Labour Party marginalizing women come after multiple scandals that show sexism within the Tory Party ahead of a general election later this year.
