Despite reports that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is on the verge of being ousted by his own Party members, he showed no fear during an interview in Coventry.
Sunak’s Political Opposition
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is under increased pressure to announce a snap election for May this year after more politicians displayed their opposition.
Sunak’s Confidence in Party Unity
Despite some calls coming from within the Tory Party for him to resign as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak stressed that the Conservative Party was united in achieving the same goal.
Sunak Denies Ousting Rumours
When asked if he was concerned about potentially being ousted by members of his own Party, Sunak responded, dismissing any truth to a potential ousting.
Sunak “Not Interested”
Sunak told reporters that “all Conservatives are united in wanting to deliver a brighter future for our country” insisting he’s “not interested” in what he described as “Westminster politics.”
Sunak Focusing on Britain’s Future
Sunak claimed that he was concentrating on Britain’s future rather than worrying about discontent within his Party, “What matters is the future of our country,” he said.
Sunak’s Promise
Sunak insisted that the future of Britain is what he is “squarely focussed on” claiming “That’s what I get up every morning, working as hard as I can, to deliver.”
Sunak Cites Main Goals
Sunak cited “Cutting people’s taxes” and “increasing the state pension” as his main goals rather than whether his Party had lost faith in him ahead of the general election.
Prime Minister’s Rwanda Promise
The Prime Minister responded to questions while on a trip to Coventry, where he promised a crowd he was planning to initiate his Rwanda scheme as early as Spring.
Sunak’s “Deterrent”
Sunak claimed he was “still committed… to get a flight off in the spring,” arguing that the country needs a “deterrent” to stop organised crime groups from smuggling people across the Channel.
Tories Against the Rwanda Scheme
Many Tory MPs and Tory peers have criticised Sunak’s Rwanda scheme, slamming it as “unlawful” and ineffective against the UK’s immigration woes.
Jenrick Argues Rwanda Plan Is Flawed
Former Immigration Minister, Robert Jenrick, resigned from his position in response to Sunak’s Rwanda plan for allegedly not going far enough to prevent mass immigration.
Rwanda Scheme “Won’t Work”
Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman slammed the Rwanda scheme, echoing Jenrick’s comments and arguing it “won’t work” and “won’t stop the boats.”
Lords Vote For Legislation Against Rwanda
Tory peer Lord Anderson of Ipswich was one of the Lords who voted in favour of five amendments that could possibly shatter Sunak’s Rwanda hopes.
Sunak Should Have Nothing to Hide
Lord Anderson scrutinised the bill, claiming “If Rwanda is safe, as the government would have us declare, it (the bill) has nothing to fear from such scrutiny.”
Sunak’s Mass Exodus
Sunak is also facing a mass exodus of Tory MPs who are walking out of their positions ahead of the general election, including the Armed Forces Minister and former Prime Minister Theresa May.
Replacement in Question
The replacement in question has been reported as Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council since 2022.
Business Secretary Defends Sunak
Despite reports, Business Secretary, Kemi Badenoch, admitted that reports that “one or two MPs” are plotting against Sunak, but claims he has nothing to fear.
Putting Penny Fears To Bed
According to Badenoch, the MPs in question need to “stop messing around” while arguing that if Penny was here, she would be distancing herself from those comments.”
Sunak Fights For Four More Years
Sunak has insisted that the Tories are turning things around despite heavy criticism about the economy, claiming, “We really have turned the corner at the start of this year. Inflation has been more than halved.”
Sunak Shows No Fear
Sunak’s denial that there is an issue within the Tory Party suggests he has no fear of being ousted, but the next few weeks of Tory dissatisfaction will be telling.
