A former foreign secretary has admitted that Truss’s recent actions in America show that she “should never have been Prime Minister in the first place.”
Former Foreign Secretary Speaks
A former foreign secretary has slammed former Prime Minister Liz Truss for damaging US-UK relations.
Truss’s Comments on Biden
During her trip to the US, former Prime Minister Liz Truss claimed that President Joe Biden was a “weak president,” causing British politicians to react.
International Relations
Now, former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind has attacked Truss’s tactics in regard to international relations, especially with the US.
“She Should Never Have Been Prime Minister”
“I think it is more evidence of her immaturity and yet another reason why she should never have been Prime Minister in the first place,” Sir Rifkind said about Truss.
Interfering With Elections
Sir Rifkind argued that in order to keep peace between one country and another, democratic elections should not be interfered with.
“Don’t Get Involved”
“There’s a fundamental convention that even with your closest friends or colleagues, you do not get involved in another country’s democratic election,” said Rifkin.
Keeping Views to Yourself
Rifkin continued, “When the people of that country are choosing a prime minister, a government or president, whatever it is. You have views, but you don’t interfere.”
US Elections Underway
The US Presidential election is now in full swing, with President Joe Biden coming up against Republican candidate Donald Trump for a second time.
Endorsing Donald Trump
Liz Truss has made it clear that her support lies with former president Donald Trump, claiming that he can give the “leadership the West needs.”
Truss’s Lack of Judgement
Truss has been criticised in the past for her handling of international relations. This was highlighted by a video of the former Prime Minister claiming the “jury’s out” on whether French President Macron is a friend or foe.
UK’s Special Relationship Affected
Sir Rifkin argued that Truss should have the “basic judgement” not to pick a side during the US elections, arguing it is affecting the UK’s special relationship with the country.
Republican National Convention
Truss was interviewed at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Illinois, where she and several British politicians gathered to show support for Donald Trump.
Attempted Assassination of Trump
Truss issued her condemnation of the attempted assassination of former president Trump, while giving her opinion on who was to blame.
Blaming Secret Services
Truss claimed, “It is the responsibility of the putative assassin and the security services what’s happened,” while not holding back against Biden.
Biden as a “Weak President”
“I do not support Joe Biden,” she said, “I think he has been a weak president of the United States and I want Donald Trump to win.”
Blaming Biden
Many right-wing American commentators have blamed Joe Biden and the left-wing media’s rhetoric against Trump for the shooting, although Truss wasn’t prepared to go that far.
Drawing the Line
Truss claimed, “I don’t like the [Biden’s] rhetoric, but I am not prepared to draw the line between one and the other.”
Truss Loses Seat
Truss recently lost her seat of the last 14 years in the constituency of South West Norfolk to the hands of a Labour MP, removing her from frontline politics.
Truss’s Poor Record
The former Prime Minister holds the record for the shortest amount of time in Number 10, being ousted after just 49 days.
Starmer’s Tactics
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s tactics have been considerably different, recently acknowledging to European leaders that they must “rebuild relations” with the UK, rather than playing his cards close to his chest like Truss.
A Different Approach
Starmer also claimed that the US would support either winner of the US election, refraining from giving his own opinion on who he would prefer to win it.
