In a sit down with GB News, Priti Patel shared why her leadership “would be better” than the current Labour government. She says, “Labour needs to be held accountable.”
Patel as Leader of Tories?
In a recent interview, GBN Priti Patel, former Home Secretary for the Tory Party, spoke about her envisioned leadership. She said, “…I believe with my leadership, we can absolutely challenge them [Labour] and hold them to account…”
All Eyes
It’s not long, and Keir Starmer is already facing criticism from other political parties. Being the leader of a country has all eyes focused on him, and it’s clear people would challenge him and the Labour Party regarding how the country is managed.
Labour Isn’t Doing Enough
On the illegal migration front, Patel said Labour is willing to turn a blind eye.” She also claimed Labour has “no plan on how to tackle illegal migration and would rather put their efforts to appeasing left-wing campaign groups than introducing credible measures to stopping the boats,” Patel noted.
“Not More Than One Term”
Patel has come through swinging as she reinforced her stance as a potential leader of the Conservative Party. Patel told GB News, “I don’t want the Labour government to be more than a one-term Labour government.”
The Detention Centre
Under Boris Johnson’s leadership, the conservatives earmarked a plan for several “Greek-style detention centres, starting with Lintin-on-Ouse. The location was an abandoned Royal Air Force (RAF) where the center would be designated.
Use “Greek-Style Detention”
As the Home Secretary at the time, Patel suggested this after she visited Greece and found the success and method of operation reportedly “impressive.”
Strict Rules
She also wanted to implement similar rules of curfews and restrictions for those detainees until they are processed. She assured that measures would be in place to “keep the public safe.”
Patel’s Idea Opposed
Patel wants to tackle the immigration crisis in a leadership position. She told GB News that in her time as Home Secretary, she had many ideas for tackling immigration. She said her new idea for the Greek-style detention centre was “decried” by the left.
Illegal Immigration Cost Billions
The impact of illegal immigration affects public finance, economy, jobs, health sector, and taxes. In a debate recorded in May 2024, the UK Parliament noted that the rate of illegal immigration has increased, costing the country £5.4 billion, up from £500 million per year.
“Tories Have Failed”
According to the Labour Government, “the Tories have failed on immigration and securing borders,” throughout the years that they have been in power. Labour has previously said that the Conservatives, under Rishi Sunak’s watch, have allowed the cost of housing immigrants to increase to a massive £8 million a day.
Plans to Curb Immigration
The current Labour Government said they want to lower the reliance on foreign workers in the country. They also claimed they would start by better equipping sectors with the skills and training needed to do the work.
Uniting the Party
Patel confidently stated that she could unite her party and challenge the Labour government together. The Tories want to “hold them [Labour] accountable…” as well as “…get our party match fit all over again to win the next general election,” Patel concluded.
Conservative Goals
Priti Patel says she’s an “absolute conservative.” However, Nigel Farage is a “long-standing friend of mine…” she told GB News. But, she also noted that despite that, the Reform aided in the Conservative’s loss in the general election. While they are “friends,” they focus on their political goals.
“Detterant” Measures Rwanda Scheme 2.0?
In her interview, Patel reiterated that the Rwanda Scheme works as it will “dissuade” people, knowing they’ll be flown and set up in a third world.
“Land of Opportunity”
The UK is a land of opportunity for many people who come this way for a better future. Patel confirmed that migrants have used “credible reasons” for seeking asylum, like “changing their faith” or “classing themselves as a child.” However, it’s costing the country and taxpayer billions to sustain them.
Going forward With Plans
Should she get a chance, Patel says she will undertake the illegal immigration crisis going forward with the plan to use the detention centres providing strict rules and actively processing detainees.
Previous Delays Due to “Stop-Starts”
She also mentioned in a previous interview with GB News that “stop-starts” were a huge problem in getting the process of illegal migration underway and effectively dealt with.
Fail to See What Works?
Patel expressed that the Starmer government “gloss over the fact that there is evidence of deportation and third party processing schemes working effectively in Greece and Australia.” She confirmed that other European countries want to implement these illegal migration tactics.
She’s Certain
Dame Patel is certain that if she leads, she can unite her conservative party, and they can work together to tackle the migration crisis.
