Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer criticized Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for allowing former Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson to take the role, after Anderson’s “appalling racist and Islamophobic outburst.”
Anderson’s Controversial Remarks
Anderson refused to apologise for his remarks about the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who Anderson claimed had allowed “Islamists” to take control over Khan and the city of London.
Anderson Echoes Braverman’s Words
Anderson’s remarks came after former Home Secretary Suella Braverman also made comments about “Islamists”, arguing that they, along with “extremists” and “antisemites” had taken over the UK.
Starmer Questions PM’s Judgment
Starmer asked the question, “But what does it say about the prime minister’s judgement that he made Lee Anderson deputy chairman of his party?”
Sunak Refuses to Condemn
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that Anderson’s words were “wrong,” but refrained from calling his comments Islamophobic. Sunak never condemned Braverman’s words.
Former Prime Minister Under Fire
Former Tory Prime Minister Lizz Truss has also come under fire for failing to counter American political commentator Steve Banon, who labelled right-wing activist Tommy Robinson a “hero” in an interview with Truss.
Dowden Plays Down Anderson Comments
Echoing the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden downplayed Anderson’s comments, refusing to label them as “Islamophobic” while insisting the former Tory MP was not “intentionally” being racist.
Sunak Urged to Investigate
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is not the only one calling for Sunak to investigate the alleged Islamophobia within his ranks, as the Muslim Council of Britain also urged the PM to look into “Structural Islamophobia” within the Tory Party.

Despite recent criticism, Sunak was asked in an interview whether he believed there to be an Islamophobia problem in the Tory Party, to which he replied “No, of course there isn’t.”
Starmer Criticizes Truss and Braverman
Starmer went on to criticise the Prime Minister’s response to Lizz Truss’s controversy, noting “Whether it is Liz Truss staying silent on Tommy Robinson” along with “Suella Braverman’s extreme rhetoric.”

Lizz Truss, who was ousted as Prime Minister from her own party just 50 days after entering Number 10, claimed that her failure regarding the economy and subsequent removal was due to the “deep state.”

Sir Keir Starmer went on to call out the Prime Minister’s perceived “weakness” arguing that Tory MPs are exploiting that trait to spread their “impunity” to the nation.

“This isn’t just embarrassing for the Conservative party,” Starmer went on to say, “it emboldens the worst forces in our politics,” arguing against the Tory Party’s “extremist” views.

Former Tory MP Mohammed Amin compared the current Tory Party to the Labour Party under former leader Jeremy Corbyn, claiming that just as Jewish people felt unsafe under Corbyn, Muslims feel unsafe under Sunak.
