After being adamant that there would not be a general election in May this year, Sunak told a crowd he expects to see flights take off for Rwanda this Spring.
Sunak’s Spring Flight Plan
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has hinted in a speech that he wishes to deport migrants to Rwanda as soon as this Spring despite legal troubles surrounding the plan.
Sunak’s Push for Deportation Flights
Sunak has ignored calls for a general election as early as May but insisted he wanted to get Rwandan flights in the air this Spring instead.
Sunak’s Commitment Reiterated
During a speech in Coventry, Sunak told his crowd that he is “still committed to the timeline that I set out previously, which is we aim to get a flight off in the spring.”
Rwanda Scheme as a “Deterrent”
Sunak argued that the Rwanda plan is a way to prevent migrants from coming to the UK in the first place, “we need to have a deterrent” he told the crowd.
Sunak’s Rwanda Fight
Sunak has been fighting for his Rwanda scheme to be passed in the Supreme Court for the last two years since he took over as Prime Minister from Liz Truss.
House of Lords Blow
The House of Lords recently voted to pass five amendments that would be a huge blow to Sunak’s proposal to get migrants to Rwanda as debates rise on the country’s safety.
Rwanda as a “Safe” Country
Sunak’s biggest issue has been proving that the African country is a safe place to send migrants while facing backlash for his tactics to get planes in the year, including offering payments to Rwanda.
Status of the Rwanda Bill
Debates between Lords are still ongoing to decide the legality of the Rwanda Bill with Lord Anderson of Ipswich arguing “If Rwanda is safe, as the government would have us declare, it has nothing to fear from such scrutiny.”
Home Office Doing All It Can
Transport Secretary Trevor Phillips argued that the Home Office is “working very hard” to get legislation corrected so that deportation flights can start.
Tackling Organized Crime Groups
Phillips insisted “We are going to work very hard to make sure that we can get those flights away as quickly as we can” to counter the “organized crime groups” that are sending migrants to the UK in small boats.
Sending a Stern Message
Phillips assured the Rwanda scheme would “send out that message to break the backs of those organized crime groups” although admitted it won’t be easy.
Religious Leader’s Comparison
The Arch Bishop of Canterbury recently made a statement in the House of Lords comparing the Rwanda scheme to Nazi Germany, insisting that the country can “do better.”
Rwanda Scheme as a “Gimmick”
Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s Shadow Paymaster, argued that the whole scheme is just a “gimmick” to get votes ahead of the upcoming general election.
Ashworth’s Criticism
Ashworth insisted, “This plan, this proposal from the Government is really a gimmick costing over half a billion pounds.”
Ashworth’s Ritz Comparison
Ashworth joked that it would be “cheaper to put up the failed asylum seekers in the Paris Ritz for a number of years than this scheme.”
Sunak’s Shady Offer
Ashworth was referring to alleged offers made by the Conservatives to the Rwandan government, where Sunak claimed the UK would pay Rwanda £171,000 per migrant that they took.
Sunak Offers Migrants Thousands
Sunak also offered £3000 to each migrant to voluntarily decided to migrate to Rwanda as an incentive to get migrants on flights.
Paying Rwanda Hundreds of Millions
The UK government has also agreed to a deal with Rwanda to pay them £120 million after the first 300 deportations have taken place.
