Tory Leadership Race Getting “Personal” – Braverman and Badenoch Fueding

Kemi Badenoch accuses Suella Braverman of having a “very public” nervous breakdown. The two MPs clashed about a “private” conversation allegedly leaked to the public. Here’s what happened.

A recent spat between Suella Braverman and Kemi Badenoch soon became a public affair, with sides clearly disagreeing. These feuds developed after the historic defeat of the Conservative Party in the 2024 general elections.

BBC reported the events that occurred at an MP shadow cabinet meeting, which caused some dispute amongst the MPs. This occurred after the Tories experienced their worst defeat in UK history. 

Making It Public

Kemi Badenoch, the former Minister of State and Equalities, accused Suella Braverman, former Home Secretary, of having a “very public” nervous breakdown. The Conservative Party had a historic defeat in the 2024 elections, losing hundreds of seats.

Badenoch accused Braverman and Rishi Sunak, the conservative party’s leader, for “publically attacking” the party during the election campaign. 

Safe Space for Discussions

In a  BBC report, Badenoch called it a “shame” that the conservative MPs needed a private space to discuss challenges. Badendoch allegedly “claimed” the previous discussions within the conservative party were leaked.

On the Defence

Braverman took to social media to defend her stance in light of the accusations from Badenoch, saying that she was interested in knowing if Badenoch was accusing her of having the “very public” nervous breakdown. In her defense, Braverman also ended her post with a hashtag “We don’t leak.”

Fighting Behind Closed Doors

According to BBC reports, Badenoch used the meeting as a pivotal opportunity to voice her concerns. She said, “In government we had too much ‘nodding along,’ in the room and fights outside it.” 

Reality Hasn’t “Sunk In”

Badenoch also said that it was as if the rest of the Conservative Party members didn’t “fully grasp” the extent of the party’s general election defeat.

The Badenoch called it an “enormity.” She said this when describing the scale of the party’s defeat since the Tories now had the least seats it’s ever had in all its governing history.  

Early Elections a Bad Call?

Badenoch “fired” at party leader Rishi Sunak for not consulting the rest of the party with his intention to call an early election.

Badenoch said the culture of agreeing in the room and fighting outside is a “culture that needs to change.” She also voiced her opinion, saying, “We need to be honest with one another in private and united in the direction we take afterward,” according to BBC reports.

Nodding Along Complaints?

In defending her stance, Braverman commented on social media, saying, “Kemi and the rest of the cabinet should not have nodded along as they and Rishi took the party to disaster,” she said. 

Lack of Accountability

Braverman further voiced her opinion, saying that the party’s refusal and lack of accountability were the issues at hand. She said “refusing to take responsibility” was the party’s problem. 

No Volunteers

Amongst the Tories, there appeared to be no interest from the MPs to take over from Rishi Sunak.  According to BBC reports, Sunak said that he is willing to remain the party’s leader if they will have him. 

The Party’s Future May Be “Grim”

Reports say that the public fighting amongst members of the same party could be a concern for their future. Braverman and Badenoch’s dispute may have canceled some individual’s hope for unity, BBC reported.

According to BBC, one party member privately told Badenoch to be “less abrasive” in order to win over colleagues.

Another MP Comments – “We All Know”

One of the party members present at the shadow meeting, who was privy to the conflicting views of Braverman and Badenoch, spoke out. The MP voiced their concern about the attack of the arty leader Sunak. The member commented, “We all know what Kemi is doing.” 

Contrasting Feelings

BBC reports said that some Conservative Party members felt annoyed with Braverman’s comments online. The report says that Braverman wrote a piece on the eve of the general election. Her post was aimed at being critical of Sunak.

Possible Opposition Predictions

Ben Houchin, the mayor of Teesside, was also annoyed along with other conservative members by Braverman’s actions directed at the party leader Sunak.  In a report, he said, “if the conservatives decide to go down a route like Suealla Braverman, then we can absolutely see ourselves in opposition for generations to come.

The MPs are expected to cast votes for who of their members will sit on the party board. The winners will spearhead rules for leadership in the race towards the next election.
