On the back of stark warnings about Russian military objectives, Rishi Sunak has pledged an enormous support package to help Ukraine in its war against Putin.
Sunak With Grave Warning About Russian Military Plans
Rishi Sunak warned that Vladimir Putin’s military ambitions exceed Ukraine. He warned that European peace and security are under threat if Putin is successful in Ukraine. The conflict has raged in some fashion since 2014 before becoming a full-blown invasion attempt in 2022.
Sunak Stresses the Importance of Beating Russia
The Prime Minister said: “Defending Ukraine against Russia’s brutal ambitions is vital for our security and for all of Europe. If Putin is allowed to succeed in this war of aggression, he will not stop at the Polish border.”
Details of the Package Emerging
The government’s website says the package will include “60 boats, maritime guns, more than 1,600 strike and air defence missiles, as well as additional Storm Shadow long-range precision-guided missiles.”
Vehicles and Small Arms Ammunition Also Included
There are also: “More than 400 vehicles, including 160 protected mobility ‘Husky’ vehicles, 162 armoured vehicles and 78 all-terrain vehicles.” Additionally, “Nearly 4 million rounds of small arms ammunition” is included.
UK Also Sending Financial Help
The statement on the government website says: “The Prime Minister will travel to Poland today [Tuesday 23 April] to announce a massive uplift in military support for Ukraine, including £500m in additional military funding and our largest-ever delivery of vital equipment.”
Grant Shapps on the Military Aid
The UK Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “This record package of military aid will give President Zelenskyy and his brave nation more of the kit they need to kick Putin out and restore peace and stability in Europe.
Significant Help Provided by UK
This latest support package from the UK takes our total help to almost £12bn. Over £7bn of that money is for military support, and the rest helping to make up financial and humanitarian aid.
European Leaders Meeting to Discuss Several Issues
The package was announced ahead of a meeting with several European leaders. Sunak is travelling to Poland to meet Donald Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister. They will also meet with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Good Week of Aid for Ukraine
The announcement comes on the back of a huge support package from the USA. Their $61bn package, coupled with consistent support from Europe will really boost Ukraine’s military capability.
Battlefield Losses Could Be Reversed
Ukraine has struggled to hold on to territory recently, thanks to ammunition shortages and limited attack capability. The hope is this fresh supply will help them go back on the offensive.
Russian Losses Mounting
Depending on which source you believe, the Russians have lost anywhere between 50,000 and nearly 500,000 soldiers. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle. This will be a mix of dead and wounded.
Equipment Losses Are Huge
Russia has vast reserves of equipment from the Soviet era, but the war has put a huge dent in their stockpiles. There are tens of thousands of visually confirmed losses of equipment on the Russian side in particular.
Degradation of Russia as a Fighting Force
Military experts are saying the scale of loss on the equipment side will take over a decade to replace. There’s also the loss of many of Russia’s best-trained and most experienced combat soldiers to deal with.
War a Complete Disaster for Putin
Although the war is far from over, it has been a complete disaster for Vladimir Putin. Domestically, his support has waned. There’s a growing number of voices calling for the war to end.
Sham Election Results
Although he swept to power in the election, the overwhelming consensus amongst experts was that the entire thing was a staged event, and voter intimidation and suppression essentially won him the election.
Population Destruction
Alongside the death and wounding of hundreds of thousands of young men, many more people are said to have evacuated Russia in the early days of the war. Estimates vary, with some saying 500,000 and others saying up to 3 million.
Politically Isolated on a Global Stage
Whilst Putin still has friends in China, Iran and North Korea, he has been politically isolated from the West. This is a huge issue for Putin because it removes access to the key markets and discussions on global issues.
Support Package a Big Issue for Russia
The Russians have had the upper hand recently, but this new package is a disaster for them. NATO weaponry has time and again proved superior to Russian equipment, so a fresh delivery could see the reversal of battlefield gains.
Spending Large and Likely to Increase
The collective West has seen the results of not adequately supporting Ukraine, as many of their battlefield gains have been reversed. With new supplies being put forward, the West will want to see territory being retaken in the summer offensive.
War Far From Over, but Getting Closer
If Ukraine can make progress this summer, a depleted Russian force coupled with a re-invigorated Ukrainian military could see us enter a new, and hopefully final, stage of the war
