Peter Murrell, husband of former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been charged with embezzlement after a second arrest by Police Scotland. Here’s the full story.
Massive Shocks
Scottish politics has undergone a series of massive shocks recently, some of which are so serious they’ve brought the previously unassailable dominance of the Scottish National Party (SNP) into question.
Arrested and Charged
In the most recent event that has sent shockwaves through Scottish politics, Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the SNP and husband of Nicola Sturgeon, has found himself arrested for a second time and officially charged in connection with the embezzlement of the SNP’s funds.
Interviewed as a Suspect
He was initially arrested in April 2023 and interviewed as a suspect by Police Scotland, though he was later released that same day while further investigations were carried out.
Embezzlement Charges
Following his arrest, Police Scotland released a brief statement stating that Murrell “had been charged in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the Scottish National Party.”
“In Due Time”
Subsequently, he was released from custody, and authorities are preparing to send a report to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service “in due time.”
“Funding and Finances”
Police Scotland stated, “A 59-year-old man has today, Thursday, 18 April 2024, been charged in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the Scottish National Party. The man, who was arrested at 9.13 am today and had previously been arrested as a suspect on 5 April 2023, was charged at 6.35pm after further questioning by Police Scotland detectives investigating the funding and finances of the party.”
The statement continued, “The man is no longer in police custody. As this investigation is ongoing we are unable to comment further. The matter is active for the purposes of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 and the public are therefore advised to exercise caution if discussing it on social media. For this reason, Police Scotland has turned off the comments function on this post.”
Shocking Development
The SNP issued a terse statement: “While this development will come as a shock, the police investigation remains ongoing, and it would, therefore, be inappropriate to make any comment.”
Ongoing Inquiry
This most recent downfall of someone who was previously a pillar of Scotland’s long-ruling SNP is not an isolated incident but rather part of a massive and ongoing inquiry into the SNP’s affairs.
Operation Branchform
Police Scotland began the investigation, known as Operation Branchform, after several complaints regarding the party’s finances, particularly the status of £667,000 in donations earmarked for a pro-independence political fund.
Search and Seizure
Detectives conducted a series of coordinated operations, including searches at the party’s headquarters in Edinburgh and the seizure of a luxury motorhome parked at the residence of Murrell’s 92-year-old mother in Dunfermline.
Party Treasure
Murrell was the first member of the SNP hierarchy to be arrested as part of the investigation. SNP MSP Colin Beattie, the party’s treasurer, was interviewed under caution before being released without charge the same day.
Nicola Sturgeon
The arrests reached the very top of the SNP’s power structure. Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister, was arrested and interviewed before being released without charge just two months after she unexpectedly stepped down from the highest office in Scotland.
Withholding Information
Following these unexpected aftershocks, the resignation of key party members, including SNP MPs Douglas Chapman and Joanna Cherry, amid concerns about financial transparency and decision-making after the pair claimed the party’s accounts were withheld from them.
£107,000 Loan
Had they seen the accounts, they would have known that, amidst mounting financial pressures, Murrell extended a loan of £107,000 to the party to alleviate cash flow issues.
Embattled SNP
While half of the loan was repaid by October 2021, the revelation of this financial arrangement came to light only in December 2022, further complicating matters for the embattled SNP.
Unimpeded Investigation
This latest development in Murrell’s legal saga prompted calls for an unimpeded investigation from opposition figures.
“Incredibly Concerning Development”
Deputy Leader of Scottish Labour, Jackie Baillie, told the Guardian, “This is another incredibly concerning development in this long-running investigation. It is essential that Police Scotland can proceed with this investigation without interference.”
Tumultuous Chapter
Peter Murrell’s steep descent, and by definition that of the SNP alongside him, reflects a tumultuous chapter in Scottish politics, which has shaken the foundations of the previously unassailable Scottish National Party.
Legal Firestorm
As investigations continue, the fallout from the legal firestorm engulfing Scottish politics looks to spread far and wide throughout the small but proud nation’s leading party, which looks set to continue. What this will mean for the future of Scottish politics remains to be seen.
