Truss Cosies Up to Far Right on US Tour: Trade, Trump and the ‘Liberal Establishment’

Former British PM Liz Truss has cast doubt on the possibility of a U.S.-U.K. trade deal under Biden’s administration, placing the blame firmly at the feet of the American President. Here’s the full story.

Liz Truss has a new book, Ten Years to Save the West, and has been all over the airwaves in her attempt to promote it.

Edge of Ruin

The book tour has been almost as calamitous as her term as Prime Minister, which lasted only 49 days and brought the country to the edge of economic ruin.

Anti-Abortion and Voter Suppression

Most recently, Truss has been speaking at the Heritage Foundation, the extreme right-wing think tank which many have blamed for the raft of anti-abortion and voter suppression bills that were introduced under Trump and by his hand-picked Supreme Court Justices.

Lack of a Deal

Speaking to the crowd of right-wing policymakers, whom Truss has been nakedly trying to woo recently as her politics has taken a turn for the conspiratorial, Truss blamed current President Joe Biden for the lack of a trade deal between the UK and the US.

“That Is Absolutely Clear”

Truss told the Heritage Foundation think tank audience, “There will not be a U.S-U.K. trade deal under Joe Biden. That is absolutely clear.”

“World Was Safer”

Truss had previously also called for Americans to vote Donald Trump back into power, saying, like the other recently disgraced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, that the “world was safer” under the former President, who is currently on trial in New York.

Unhealthy and Unethical

Even though the UK and the US were unable to reach an agreement on a trade deal under her leadership due, in part, to fierce pushback amongst UK citizens to what they see as the unhealthy and unethical food practices the US enjoys, Truss attempted to, once again, cosy up to the former President.

“The Problem Lay in Britain”

Truss stated, “I know President Trump wanted to do a trade deal. The problem lay in Britain, so we need to fix that side as well.”

Apportioning Blame

However, as she has done so often since her administration collapsed in embarrassing ruin, Truss sought instead to place the blame far away from her policies or, most importantly, herself.

“Liberal Establishment”

Truss has repeatedly blamed the “liberal establishment” for the downfall of her administration, and it was no different as she spoke to the Heritage Foundation audience, who have done much to push the idea of a so-called “deep state,” which stopped Donald Trump from implementing some of his more controversial policies.

“Resistance in Whitehall”

Truss claimed that “apparatchiks” within the UK government had foiled her attempts to negotiate a trade deal with the US and that the deal would have been a sure thing “if it wasn’t for that resistance in Whitehall.”

“Foundational” Agreement

Despite Truss’s assertions, the Biden administration put on hold plans for a more limited, “foundational” trade agreement following opposition from within the Senate, which doubted that a deal would benefit Americans.

Courting Controversy

This is not the first time the press tour for the release of Truss’s book has often courted controversy, as she has tried to ingratiate herself into the worst parts of the conspiratorial side of US politics.

Civil Service Obstacles

Truss has stirred controversy with her remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the US in February, where she blamed her disastrous and mercifully short run as Prime Minister on obstacles she encountered within the civil service.

“Essentially Activists”

Truss stated: “People are joining the civil service who are essentially activists. They might be trans activists, they might be environmental extremists, but they are now having a voice within the civil service in a way I don’t think was true 30 or 40 years ago.”

“Hero”

Truss also shared a stage with former Trump advisor and the proudly self-proclaimed arch-nemesis of democracy Steve Bannon, who dumped Truss firmly in hot water when he declared the far right-wing agitator Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, a “hero.”

Emotional Toll

Closer to home, during a recent interview with Chopper’s Political Podcast on GB News, Truss also burst into tears about the emotional toll her premiership took on her family.

“Fallibilities of Their Parents”

Truss told the podcast host, “I think I find it hardest when it’s to do with my children. Most children find out the fallibilities of their parents over a number of years. Mine saw all of mine publicly exposed in very short order. I tell them not to read the papers and not to look at Twitter.”

Dark Turn

While it may be helpful, or even preferable, to write off Liz Truss as a former Prime Minister whose belief in her disastrous policies is so all-consuming that even their complete collapse has left her unconvinced of their impossibility, this recent turn to the USA is a lot darker than it may initially seem.

Snake Oil

Truss knows that American conservatism is where the money is, so she has been articulating the deep-seated fears of American conservatives, amplifying what they already believe, and then selling them the solution in the form of her book.

The Buck Stops Here

Whether the US-UK trade deal will ever materialise, one former British Prime Minister seems determined to ensure that she can profit from the largesse of American conservatives regardless of the outcome.
