Nigel Farage, former Brexit Party leader and current honorary president of Reform UK, has decided to forgo standing in the upcoming UK general election to focus on assisting Donald Trump’s U.S. re-election campaign. Here’s the full story.
Shifting Stateside
Nigel Farage, the honorary president of Reform UK and architect of the Brexit referendum, has recently shifted his gaze from UK politics to those across the Atlantic.
Significant Blow
With the general election fast approaching, Farage has announced that he will not be standing as a candidate for Reform UK, in a significant blow to the party he supposedly heads.
“Thought Long and Hard”
Farage posted on X, formerly Twitter, “I have thought long and hard as to whether I should stand in the upcoming general election. As honorary president of Reform UK, I am fully supportive of Richard Tice’s leadership and urge voters to put their trust in him and Lee Anderson.”
“Not the Right Time”
He continued, “I will do my bit to help in the campaign, but it is not the right time for me to go any further than that.”
Helping Trump
Interestingly, Farage stated that his political endeavours had shifted to American politics and announced that he would be doing his best to help secure former President Donald Trump, currently on trial for a legion of crimes related to the 2016 election and the attempted insurrection on January 6th, a win in the upcoming election.
“In Any Way That I Can”
Farage wrote, “Important though the general election is, the contest in the United States of America on November 5th has huge global significance. A strong America as a close ally is vital for our peace and security. I intend to help with the grassroots campaign in the USA in any way that I can.”
Political Star Waning
Farage, whose political star has waned since his side won the Brexit referendum, has been very vocal about the allure of a potential role in the US election.
“Very Firm Job Offer”
During an interview with TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer, Farage revealed, “I do actually have a very firm job offer on the table from America, which is very, very tempting.”
No Offer From Trump
However, when pushed to provide more information on his apparent job offer by Times Radio, Farage clarified that, while he had been offered work in the United States, none of the offers he had received were from the legality embattled former President.
“Not Directly by Him”
Farage told Times Radio, “I have been offered jobs in America. That is true, but not directly by him [Trump].”
Staunch Support
Farage’s relationship with Trump is well-documented and dates back to Trump’s 2016 election victory. Farage was the first UK politician to meet Trump post-election, and their rapport has grown over the years. Farage has expressed his staunch support for the former President.
“Most Resilient and Brave Person”
Farage said of Trump, “This is the single most resilient and brave person I have ever met in my life.”
Barrage of Ridicule
Despite his high hopes for lucrative job offers across the pond, back in plain old Blighty, the reaction to Farage’s decision not to stand for Reform UK has been met with a barrage of ridicule.
“Question the Patriotism”
Former Secretary of State Nadine Dorries tweeted in response to Farage’s online statement, “You have to question the patriotism in a man who has always claimed above all else to be a patriot when he puts another country before his own.”
“Elections in the US Are More Relevant”
She continued, arguing that Nigel Farage is not “standing in the general election because he thinks the elections in the US are more relevant.”
Less Than Welcoming
Similarly, in a blow to Farage’s possible plans, the response from those in America has also been less than warm and welcoming.
“Can We Leave Him?”
Anthony Scaramucci, the former White House Director of Communications, when asked about the possibility of Farage taking up a role in Trump’s campaign, responded, “With Nigel Farage, can we leave him on your side of the pond?”
“Human Wrecking Ball”
He added, “He’s another human wrecking ball disaster kind of person. He’s done enough damage to your country, let’s leave him in your country.”
Career Crossroads
Nigel Farage’s political career appears to be at a crossroads. With his work in the UK seemingly done, Farage may not want to stay to be tarnished by the legacy of Brexit, with consistent polling showing that 55% of the British public believe it to have been a mistake.
For Better or Worse
While his involvement in the US election remains unofficial for now, Farage likely sees himself as a man who could, for better or worse, help guide Trump back to the White House.
Uncertain Future
Whether his political endeavours will be as successful and lucrative for him in America as they have been in the UK remains to be seen. Though someone should point out that by moving to America, he would technically be an immigrant who moved abroad in search of a better life, just to see his face.
