The report also details potential legal violations by plastic producers, with new legal actions, such as California’s recent decision to investigate fossil fuel and petrochemical companies “for their role in causing and exacerbating the global plastics pollution crisis.”

With the wool now firmly removed from the public’s eyes, the demand for action on plastic pollution and the climate change these industries cause is growing. The report concludes with a call to action, urging regulators and legal authorities to address industry misconduct.

We’ve Been Here Before
Their willingness to lie to the public, all while they knew the damage that plastics could cause and how futile recycling was as a solution, is similar to other industry cover-ups, like those used by the tobacco industry to lie about the costs associated with smoking, or the petrochemical companies attempts to muddy the water over the causes of climate change.
As society continues to grapple with environmental catastrophe caused by plastic pollution, the desperate need for accountability and systemic change has never been more evident, as the idea that the companies that create such massive problems could also be the solution to them is as much a lie as the ones told to all of us about recycling.
