Just hours after the UK Parliament passed the controversial Rwanda bill, which has been ruled illegal by the country’s highest court, the perilous across the English Channel has once again claimed innocent lives.

The horrifying incident has called the government’s claims that the Rwanda bill would reduce crossings of the English Channel by asylum seekers into question.

French authorities reported that the overloaded boat got into trouble shortly after departure as the overcrowded dinghy struggled to cope with the strong currents.

French authorities quickly launched a rescue effort, but the grim reality of the situation soon set in, as Calais prefect Jacques Billant told the Guardian that “despite attempts to reanimate them, five of them died.”

Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes as the rescue operation unfolded, with Sandrine, a charity worker who witnessed the tragedy, telling Sky News, “I saw them bringing in the bodies, and the father (of the girl who died) fell into my arms.”

She continued, “The father saw his daughter die before him.”

Every Tragedy an Opportunity

In the wake of the tragedy, government officials expressed their condolences whilst also not letting the opportunity to promote their anti-immigration policies pass them by.

“A Certain Element of Compassion”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that the tragedy was “a reminder of why my plan is so important because there’s a certain element of compassion about everything that we’re doing. We want to prevent people making these very dangerous crossings. If you look at what’s happening, criminal gangs are exploiting vulnerable people.”

“Break This Business Model”

He continued, “They are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies; you’ve seen an enormous increase in the numbers over the past few years. This is what tragically happens when they push people out to sea and that’s why, for matters of compassion more than anything else, we must actually break this business model.”

“Tragedies Have to Stop”

UK Home Secretary James Cleverly condemned the loss of life, writing on X, formerly Twitter, “These tragedies have to stop. I will not accept a status quo which costs so many lives.”

Ethical Implications

The Rwanda plan, which the Prime Minister championed, has sparked heated debate regarding its effectiveness and the ethical implications of sending some of the world’s most vulnerable people to a country the UK’s highest court has condemned as unsafe.

Proponents argue that such measures are necessary to disrupt criminal networks and prevent further loss of life at sea.

Underlying Causes

However, critics contend that punitive approaches fail to address the underlying causes of migration and may exacerbate human suffering.

No Evidence

Matthew Rycroft, who has been in charge of implementing the Rwanda scheme for over two years, previously said he had no evidence of its effectiveness as a deterrent.

The scheme’s cost has also been questioned, with some estimates putting the cost of sending just 300 asylum seekers to Rwanda at over £500 million.

“Another Devastating Human Tragedy”

Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, said: “It is shocking to learn of the terrible loss of yet more lives in the Channel this morning. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected. This is another devastating human tragedy that could and should have been avoided, and for it to happen just hours after the government’s Rwanda bill became law makes it all the more tragic.”

Desperate People, Desperate Actions

They continued, “The only sustainable way to reduce dangerous journeys … is for the government to reduce the need for desperate people to take desperate actions. Instead of hostile, headline-grabbing legislation, we need to see safe routes for those fleeing conflict and persecution, including more options for family reunion, refugee visas, and cooperation with our European neighbours.”

Common Tragedies

As the debate over how to handle the ongoing humanitarian crisis of desperate migrants attempting the dangerous crossing to the UK continues, tragic events like these will be all the more common.

First Day Failure

As the government’s much-touted Rwanda plan has been shown, on its first day of operation, not to deter those seeking a better life from attempting the crossing, the need for concerted action to address the underlying causes of migration remains paramount.

Long List

However, with the election drawing ever closer and neither party daring to appear weak on immigration, it seems likely that these most recent deaths will be another tragic statistic added to the already long list of similar catastrophes.
