A trial involving the near-20-year-old case of Madeliene McCann and alleged abductor Christian B has been suspended due to the alleged online post from a judge that called for a President to be killed.
Trial Suspension Over Judge’s Controversial Tweet
The Madeleine McCann trial has been suspended because of a controversial online post from the judge that was noted by the defence.
Convicted rapist Christian B is the number one suspect after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal back in 2007.
The trial, scheduled at the Braunschweig state court in Germany, experienced delays due to extensive queues at the courthouse, and its opening moments were abruptly adjourned as the defence highlighted social media posts suggesting potential bias by a lay judge.
“Such a lay judge has no business participating in a fair criminal trial,” argued the Defence Lawyer Friedrich Fuelscher.
Online Post Revealed
The alleged online post from the judge announced that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of torturing animals, should be killed. A weeklong postponement has been initiated to assess whether the lay judge, accused of advocating violence in her tweets, should be disqualified.
Brueckner, also known as Christian B in Germany, due to privacy laws, slammed the trial as “ridiculous,” despite already serving a prison sentence for a rape in 2005.
Two Decades of Questions
The Madeleine McCann case is one of the most high-profile cases of abduction of all time, and although Breuckner has not been charged, this is the first time in nearly 20 years that someone has been as closely linked to the disappearance.
Having spent considerable time in Portugal, including Praia da Luz where Madeleine disappeared, Brueckner denies any involvement in her case.
Disturbing Crimes Lasting Years
The prosecution alleged that Brueckner committed multiple sexual offences in Portugal between 2000 and 2017, including three counts of rape and two of sexual abuse of children.
This trial marks the first time the 47-year-old German has been seen in public since being linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2020.
Currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape in Portugal, Brueckner’s defence says he must be acquitted immediately.
One man, Jurgen Krumstroh, who rented out an allotment to Brueckner in Germany, said, “He was always friendly. I can’t say anything bad about him.”
“He always greeted me but he didn’t take part in common activities. He was a loner but he never acted suspiciously,” said Krumstroh, who claims he was unaware of Brueckner’s criminal activity.
Indecent Exposure Allegation
Brueckner is also being accused of various assaults, including indecent exposure to an 11-year-old Portuguese girl in 2017.
The defence also questioned the judge’s role as a child psychologist, which, according to them, could have a bias towards the final decision in a case regarding the abduction of a child.
The four-month-long trial includes five different charges that all relate to abuse in some form from Brueckner during his time in Portugal.
Prosecutors detailed graphic accusations, including the alleged sexual elderly woman in Portugal, while recording the incident on video.
Brueckner’s trial will be postponed for a week while the court comes to a decision on the Judge’s online post.
