After being asked by the BBC if he’d jumped in intentionally, Davey admitted, “Once I did. The rest I just kept falling in. But it’s fun!”

Although legal in emergencies to prevent sewage backup, these discharges have sparked debates about their frequent and routine nature and led to vast swathes of England’s rivers, lakes, and coastlines carrying warnings that they are hazardous to swimmers.
Cryptosporidium Outbreak
Recently, an outbreak of cryptosporidium, a waterborne parasite which causes severe gastrointestinal illness, disrupted the lives of over 17,000 households and businesses in Brixham, Devon.
Urgent Notice
The incident led to South West Water issuing an urgent notice advising residents that their tap water was no longer safe to drink and that they should boil it before drinking it.
46 Confirmed Cases
The UK Health Security Agency confirmed that over 100 individuals reported symptoms, and there were 46 confirmed cases, two of which were hospitalised, showing symptoms which included diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.
Public Outrage
Though the company eventually addressed the issue, public anger mounted after it was revealed that South West Water had announced a dividend payout increase to £127 million, over £15 million more than the previous year.
Policy Measures
In response to the sewage crisis, Sir Ed Davey announced a series of policy measures to improve the dire and potentially dangerous situation.
Expert Representation
These proposals include ensuring local environmental experts are represented on water company boards to enhance public accountability and transparency, abolishing the current water regulator, Ofwat, and establishing a new regulatory body.
