Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has raised eyebrows with a stark warning about the “deep state” allegedly plotting against Donald Trump’s potential second term. Here’s the full story.
Look Who’s Back
Britain’s shortest-serving Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has a new book out, Ten Years To Save The West, and has been all over the news, taking every chance she can get to promote it.
Lettuce Beatdown
The former Prime Minister, who gained international infamy for failing to outlast lettuce when in office, has become a strange darling of the US right-wing, who see her not as a disgraced Prime Minister whose economic libertarianism drove the country to the brink of ruin, but as a hero who was vanquished too soon by enemies without and within.
Professional Pandering
In a recent op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal, Truss issued a stark warning about the challenges awaiting Donald Trump if he secures a second term in the White House in order to pander to her newfound American fans and bump up sales of her political memoir.
Deep State Conspiracy
Truss, whose American version of the book is subtitled “Revolution Against Globalism, Socialism, and the Liberal Establishment,” ventured into controversial and conspiratorial territory by suggesting that the so-called “deep state” is poised to intensify its efforts against Trump’s agenda.
Up in Arms
Truss drew parallels between her own political downfall and the challenges she believes Trump will face, arguing that, like the UK “deep state,” which she blames for bringing down her premiership, the US establishment is currently “arming against Mr Trump and his economic program.”
“The Fight of Their Lives”
Truss argued that Trump and the American conservatives who have tied their wagons to his campaign were in for “the fight of their lives.”
49 Long Days
Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Truss said, “The administrative state undermined Mr. Trump’s first term and undermined my tenure as Britain’s prime minister, forcing me out of office after 49 days.”
How Wrong She Was
She continued, “I assumed that I would be able to drive through the agenda on which I was elected. How wrong I was. The opaque British bureaucratic state undermined my proposed reforms, and their American equivalents will have Mr. Trump in their sights if he is victorious in November. The deep state will attempt to undercut him even more than it did in his first term.”
Massive Tax Cuts
In her book, Truss argues that she was ousted not because of the economic turmoil triggered by her disastrous mini-budget but because of a “sustained whispering campaign” by key financial institutions against her policies, which would have provided massive tax cuts for the rich.
Call to Action
Faced with the imagined threat of the “deep state,” Truss issued a call of action for fellow conservatives, stressing that Republicans would need a “concerted plan to dismantle” the bureaucratic assassins she presumably sees around every corner.
Failing Upwards
Though many have written off Truss as someone who failed upwards into the highest office in the land, her warning will be well received by some on the stranger sides of the right who believe that entrenched government institutions pose a nearly insurmountable obstacle to enacting the conservative policies they so desperately want to see.
Conservative Agenda
However, these same conservatives have little to say when you point out that, at least in America, their conservative agenda seems to be marching forward apace, with the overturning of Roe v Wade the latest in a long line of conservative victories over human rights.
Laughing Stock
Despite being a laughing stock in the UK, Truss is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance in the USA.
Dipping Her Toe in Populism
This is not even the first time that Truss has dipped her toe into US-style populism. She previously appeared at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the States, where she issued yet another rallying cry to her newfound friends.
No True Scotsman
Truss called on true conservatives, not those she decried as “conservatives in name only,” to vote for Republicans who “aren’t going to cave into the establishment.”
Wall Fraud
Truss also appeared on a podcast alongside former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, who is currently awaiting trial in May for fraud charges he faces surrounding the misappropriation of $25 million for the private “We Build the Wall” scheme, which has already seen three of Bannon’s associates convicted.
With Friends Like These
Unsurprisingly, Truss has also called for Americans to vote Donald Trump back into power, saying, like the other recently disgraced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, that the “world was safer” under the former President, who is also currently on trial.
Impossible Plans
While it may be helpful, or even preferable, to write off Liz Truss as a former Prime Minister whose belief in her own disastrous policies is so all-consuming that even their complete collapse has left her unconvinced of their impossibility, this recent turn to the USA is actually a lot darker than it may originally seem.
Snake Oil Saleswoman
Truss knows that American conservatism is where the money is, so she articulates the deep-seated fears of American conservatives, amplifies what they already believe, and then sells them the solution in the form of her book.
Hanging Around
Though a lettuce outlasted Liz Truss while she was Prime Minister, it seems that she will likely be around a lot longer now that she is out of office.
