Renowned author JK Rowling has sparked controversy with her critique of political associations with transgender advocacy groups, amidst a debate fueled by the recent Cass Review on gender care practices. Here’s the full story.
Outspoken Views
JK Rowling has been in the news headlines recently, not due to any new books or adaptations of her world-famous Harry Potter series but for her outspoken views against transgender rights.
Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism
Rowling has been a strong proponent of the Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism movement, which advocates for a strictly sex-based understanding of gender.
Fierce Proponent
JK Rowling is a fierce proponent of the ideology and has frequently courted controversy by deadnaming transgender individuals and pushing back against any perceived advance in transgender rights, as she is cheered on by the right-wing press whose attitudes to transgender individuals are frequently hostile at best.
Back in the News
Rowling has been in the news again recently after voicing her strong criticism of politicians making what she sees as an unholy alliance with transgender advocacy groups, which she claims could be “to the detriment of very vulnerable children and women.”
Growing Scrutiny
Rowling’s stance emerges amidst growing scrutiny of gender care practices, as evidenced by Dr Hilary Cass’s recent review, which shed light on the complexities and uncertainties surrounding gender care, particularly among young individuals.
Lack of Evidence
The report underscores the lack of robust evidence supporting specific interventions, such as puberty blockers while cautioning against potential long-term impacts on psychosexual development.
No Consensus
However, there is no consensus in the medical community. Dr Aiden Kelly, who worked in mental health and has been a gender specialist for almost ten years, was particularly critical of the Cass report.
“Never Worked in Gender”
Dr Kelly told the Guardian, “It’s important to remember that people carrying out this expert review have never worked in gender. The people who actually know the work, and have been doing the work for a long period of time, don’t hold that level of caution and fear.”
“Meaningful Care”
He continued, “Yes, more research is needed. But not at the cost of actually offering meaningful care.”
“Privileged Places”
Despite the apparent lack of certainty amongst the medical community, Rowling has criticised what she sees as LGBTQ+ groups such as Stonewall and Mermaids being given “privileged places at the table” by politicians.
“Shred a Research Pack”
In a long thread on X, formerly Twitter, of which Rowling is a prolific user, she lashed out at the gay rights advocacy group Stonewall and the transgender support group Mermaids, writing, “In 2018, Stonewall literally told schools to shred a research pack saying there were risks to puberty blockers.”
More Than Boy and Girl
Her post continued, “In 2022 Stonewall told the world that ‘research’ suggests two year olds can be trans. It advocated for nurseries – NURSERIES – to start teaching kids that there are more genders than boy and girl.”
“Snuggled Up”
She went on to say, “Politicians have snuggled up to Stonewall and Mermaids, given them privileged places at the table and adopted their talking points, to the detriment of very vulnerable children, young people and women.
“When Will This End?”
Finally, she asked, “When are we going to see this fully investigated? When will this end?”
Famous Critique
Rowling’s critique extends to celebrities who have publicly endorsed transgender advocacy, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who are known for their roles in the Harry Potter films.
Endangering Women’s Rights
Despite their support for transgender rights, Rowling challenges their alignment with movements that she perceives as endangering women’s rights and promoting questionable medical practices.
“Safe in the Knowledge”
Rowling launched into a tirade after replying to a post implying that Radcliffe and Watson would be “safe in the knowledge” she would forgive them if they issued a public apology.
“Hard-Won Rights”
Rowling’s reply read, “Not safe, I’m afraid. Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces.”
“Medical Malpractice”
Rowling then wrote: “Even if you don’t feel ashamed of cheerleading for what now looks like severe medical malpractice, even if you don’t want to accept that you might have been wrong, where’s your sense of self-preservation?”
Cliff Edge
Finally, she added, “The bandwagon you hopped on so gladly is hurtling towards a cliff.”
“A Tragedy”
She added that the Cass report’s findings were “not a triumph, it’s the laying bare of a tragedy”.
“Transgender Women Are Women”
Rowling’s stance stands in stark contrast to that of the stars of the Harry Potter films, which were based on her books. Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, during an event for the LGBTQ+ suicide prevention charity The Trevor Project, stated categorically that “transgender women are women.”
“Constantly Questioned”
Similarly, Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, wrote on Twitter in June 2018: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are.”
“See You, Respect You and Love You”
She added, “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.
“Modern Saint”
However, others have endorsed Rowling’s views, with disgraced former Prime Minister Boris Johnson defending her as a “modern saint.”
More Common
As the battle around gender identity and transgender rights continues to rage online, incalculable harm is being done to the LGBTQ+ community every day, with regressive and transphobic views becoming more common.
Time Will Tell
With critics like JK Rowling frequently speaking out on the issue against charities and advocacy groups who work tirelessly for the transgender community, only time will tell which side history will look harshly upon.
