Jacob Rees-Mogg, the prominent Tory politician, has sparked controversy and become a target of ridicule after going on a bizarre rant about milk. The old-fashioned Tory also targeted consumers who opt for skimmed milk over full-fat varieties.
His assertions, made during a segment of his GB News programme, “State of the Nation” drew both criticism and also made him a laughing stock. Rees-Mogg sampled six different types of milk on his show while interviewing a dairy farmer.
His remarkably in-depth commentary extolled the virtues of full-fat milk while dismissing alternatives such as oat, almond, and cashew milk as “ghastly.”
Rees-Mogg had surprisingly strong opinions, insisting that plant-based milk “can’t be milk” and claimed that almond milk tasted like “porridge liquefied.”
Low-Fat Lament
The former Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy minister lamented the decline of whole-fat dairy products in favour of low-fat alternatives. He claimed this change in the nation’s palate was primarily driven by unproven health concerns.
Rees-Mogg stated: “The health lobby went for yoghurt and cheese claiming the low-fat options were better for you. Unfortunately, the public began to obey, with lower fat options increasing in sales volume. But then things took a turn for the worse with even more ghastly things coming out like oat, almond, cashew and soya milk.”
However, he expressed optimism at the resurgence of traditional whole milk, citing a recent 2% increase in sales.
Liberal Milk
Rees-Mogg’s comments took a turn for the bizarre when he started ranting that it was only “liberals who drink skimmed milk.” He also claimed that full-fat milk would “nourish your inner Tory.”
Reactions to Rees-Mogg’s statements were swift and varied. Labour MP Stella Creasy had her tongue firmly in her cheek when she suggested it resembled a parody.
She joked, “We must tackle deepfake technology being used to create political content urgently before they further undermine what confidence people have left in democracy.”
Satire?
Social media users echoed similar sentiments, questioning the sincerity of Rees-Mogg’s remarks and speculating whether they were intended as satire. Rees-Mogg’s strange rant on milk isn’t the first time Rees-Mogg has courted controversy.
On one memorable occasion, he appeared to fall asleep during a debate in the Commons on Brexit, slumping over the green benches. He has become infamous for his often bizarre comments, making it hard to take him seriously.
One, he claimed, “I’m all in favour of nannies but not the nanny state,” and on another occasion, asked, “How are we going to revive this economy if we do not encourage the small business man, and the tall businessman, too?”
Political Undertones
While Rees-Mogg’s remarks may appear to be about milk preferences on the surface, they carry deeper political undertones.
His characterization of skimmed milk drinkers as “liberals” and the association of full-fat milk with Tory values hint at a strange attempt to turn milk, of all things, into another front in the culture wars.
